designsafe® Floating License

The designsafe Floating License (also called a Concurrent User License) is a Network Floating License that allows any number of designsafe installations to share a single product license but limits the number of concurrent users. For example, a workgroup using a Floating License for 2 concurrent users may have 10 or more designsafe installations on computers throughout their location but a maximum of 2 users will be able to use designsafe at the same time.

How does it work?

Each designsafe installation has an associated product license. The Standard License is located in a fixed location on the local machine. A Floating License is installed to a network server or shared network resource and is referenced in that location by all designsafe installations making use of the Floating License.

Once you’ve installed your Floating License and have associated it with all your designsafe installations, the handling of the Floating License should be largely transparent and simple. On startup, designsafe will attempt to validate the active license. With a Floating License this means checking for active users to determine if a license is available. If the current concurrent user count is less than the total associated with the Floating License your designsafe session begins without hesitation.

If the maximum number of concurrent users are already using the designsafe Floating License you will be presented with a Licensing Alert that indicates that no licenses are currently available. This Licensing Alert will also include a list of active users for reference.

What are the Requirements?

The Floating License has the following requirements in addition to the standard designsafe system requirements:

A suitable network location for the Floating License file that:

  • Is accessible by all designsafe installations/users.
  • Permits read/write access for all designsafe installations/users including read/write privileges for the license file itself.
  • Has the same UNC path for all referencing designsafe installations/users. (The drive mapping may differ by drive letter but the underlying UNC path must be identical.)

In addition, the designsafe Floating License does require an active network connection. To use designsafe with a Floating License you must be connected to your network at all times.
